Day 1 – January 9: Arrival in San Diego
A luxury motor coach will perform pickups in Salem, Woodburn, and Tualatin along the way to the PDX Airport where we will board our direct flight to the sunny skies and beaches of San Diego! We will arrive in the afternoon, check into the Hampton Inn on the San Diego Harbor (the Maritime Museum is in front of the hotel), and freshen up for an outing to Little Italy to stretch our legs and have dinner in one of the local restaurants. The remainder of the warm evening is yours to enjoy! (D)
Day 2 – January 10: USS Midway and Harbor Tour
The day starts with breakfast at the hotel and then a short drive to the USS Midway where a docent will introduce what was at the time the largest ship in the world. We will spend the morning with the guide and still have a bit of time to tour on our own before lunch. After lunch, we will stay at the harbor as we board a boat to take a tour of the harbor, enjoying the warm weather from the water. We will have a chance to return to the hotel to freshen up before heading out to dinner on the town. (B,L,D)
Day 3 – January 11: Balboa Park
After breakfast at the hotel, we will head out to Balboa Park. We will spend the majority of the day in the park, but just be able to scratch the surface of the 1,000 acre park with its historical, horticultural, and educational sites. We will start in the zoo with early admission and get up close and personal with Big Cats, before offering free time in the park to seek out your own areas of interest. In the late afternoon, we will return to the hotel before heading out to dinner as a group. (B,D)
Day 4 – January 12: Surfliner and Anza Borrego
This morning we will head out of San Diego after breakfast up the coast to San Clemente to enjoy the beach, pier, and quaint streets of the town. At this point, we will let the coach drive back to San Diego empty as we will board the Amtrak Surfliner for its stunning journey down the southern California coastline. We will have lunch on-board the train and debark in San Diego where the coach will be waiting to take us to the Anza Borrego desert where we will be taken to stunning viewpoints before eating dinner under the stars. We will return to the hotel a bit later today, but tomorrow we will have a leisurely start to the day. (B,L,D)
Day 5 – January 13: Mission Basilica and Hotel Coronado
Today we will have a leisurely start to the day and depart the hotel later in the morning to tour the historic Mission Basilica, the second Franciscan-founded mission in the Californias. After soaking up the history and imagining what the area must have been like in the 1700s, we will eat lunch before heading to another iconic San Diego location, the Hotel Coronado. We will tour the hotel and have time to spend in and around the hotel before going to dinner as a group and then returning to the hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 6 – January 14: Trolley Day!!!
Today will be a choose-your-own-adventure day with your own hop-on-hop-off trolley pass. You will be able to board the trolley just in front of the hotel near the harbor where you can choose to sightsee from the trolley or get off at one of the many locations. If you did not get enough of Balboa Park – this is your chance. If you want to spend more time around the Hotel Coronado – you can do it. This will be a fun and easy way to explore the areas that you wish. We will meet up in the late afternoon to go to dinner as a group and then head out on the town for a show. We will return to the hotel to rest. (B,D)
Day 7 – January 15: Little Italy and Journey Home
Our last day in San Diego will be more than just a travel day! First, enjoy the morning at your leisure with breakfast and the harbor close at hand. We will check out of the hotel and head just into Little Italy to enjoy the weekly Street Fair; guests can choose to get lunch in a local restaurant or in the Little Italy Food Hall. A short drive will then take us to the airport where we will catch our direct flight back to PDX where a luxury motor coach will be waiting to take us back to our original point of departure. (B)
