Day 1 – Saturday September 11th – Home to Long Beach CA
Welcome to sunny California, we’ll make our way to luggage claim, and our luxury motor coach. Next, it’s the USS Iowa Museum Battleship… after being built at the New York Navy Shipyard the Iowa began her service during WWII. Namesake of the last class of Battleships, she went on to serve during three different eras. Today, she serves as a symbol of American freedom and a community platform for education and veterans. Awarded for best ship handling, weapons employment, tactics, command and control. The Battle “E” is awarded once per year and only one award per squadron. Possibly the most important Command Excellence Award a ship can earn, competition for this decoration is fierce and not many ships can match the IOWA’s four awards. We’ll make our way up to Angel’s Gate Park where we’ll take in the spectacular views and visit the Korean Bell of Friendship… the bell itself, crafted according to traditional Korean bell-making techniques, is massive, measuring over 7 feet tall and weighing 17 tons. It was modeled after the Bronze Bell of King Songdok, which was cast in 771 and is still on display at the the National Museum of Gyeongju. Welcome to our home for the night the beautiful Westin, Long Beach… you’ll have some time to freshen up before we indulge in a wonderful dinner. The Westin, Long Beach, CA (D)
